Displaced:
Of paper dreams and digital realities. A tension exists
today between the established world of paper and the allure of a digitalised
fantasy land. We become aware of our fetish for the tangible object yet lust
after the ephemeral nature of the pixel. I am interested in exploring this
tension and the ways in which concepts of reality are twisted by certain ways
of presenting a photograph. By physically ripping constructed or found images
from their original context and re-photographing them within new environments I
hope to question the natural distrust engendered by the art of digital
manipulation. My own use of digital tools adds to the mystery of the images by
further blurring the boundaries of imaginary and real, digital and tangible. This
project has been a playful exploration of these themes, drawing on an Alice in Wonderland sense
of adventure and scale where paper people can walk among us. These people are
displaced, exploring a new environment both in their physical manifestations
and in the way that they traverse the boundaries of photographic reality.
